President Adama Barrow on Thursday inaugurated the Kiang Jali Health Centre in the Lower River Region, an excellent development for residents of the province, who will have a modern healthcare facility that will benefit the whole of Kiang West.
In his inaugural statement, President Barrow emphasised the Government’s goal of improving Gambians’ dignity and raising the standard of living for every citizen, regardless of their political affiliation.
“This health centre, which we proudly unveil today, is just one of the many initiatives my Government spearheads nationwide. It is part of a broader commitment to elevate the standard of living for all Gambians and residents.” The President said. Recognising that a healthy population is the cornerstone of sustainable development, our efforts in the health sector, as outlined in the National Development Plan- NDP YIRIWA 2023-2027, are paramount. He added.
Prior to the Barrow administration, the natives of Kiang, in particular Kiang Jali, had experienced challenges, which included difficult road conditions, lack of electricity, and clean water. This has now become a thing of the past as President Barrow told the gathering that the positive impact of the policies of his government was changing the face of the Gambian society, most especially Kiang West.
The people rejoiced about the development programmes they enjoyed since the new Government came to power in 2017.
In his welcoming remarks on behalf of the people, the Governor of Lower River Region (LRR), Seedy Lamin Bah, recalled the challenges the people of LRR experienced and conveyed his gratitude to the President for supporting the Jali health centre project and its development strategies. “The health centre will not only benefit the residents of Jali but for everyone who requires medical treatment and hospitalisation.
The Governor concluded by recalling other development projects initiated by the Barrow administration they are currently enjoying, which include ‘light up Kiang,’ a good road network, and clean drinking water, among others.
The President outlined specific targets to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in The Gambia. He emphasised the need to enhance access to healthcare services and improve health infrastructure.
The hospital is well equipped with air-conditioned delivery rooms, allowing women in labour ‘to deliver in dignity and comfort.’
“With improved roads for referrals and access to water and electricity in health centres, we anticipate a further reduction in maternal and infant mortality rates in The Gambia.” the President highlighted.
The Minister for Health, Honourable Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, underlined the significance of having comprehensive healthcare facilities and skilled human resources in addressing health emergencies. Dr. Samateh said the establishment of the health centre is a manifestation of the President’s commitment to make quality, affordable health care a right.
President Barrow cut the ribbon to officially open the new health centre wing named Alkali Nyakudi Health Centre. He further inspected the health Centre’s facilities and equipment and conveyed that the facilities are not only comprehensive but also highly advanced and modern.
