The Gambia holds a national census every ten years, and the last one was carried out in 2013. To kick off 2024, His Excellency President Adama Barrow today received delegates from the Gambia Bureau of Statistics as he was interviewed and counted.
The President spoke about the importance of conducting a population census following a census interview with the Gambia Bureau of Statistics team led by the Statistician General, Mr. Nyakasi Sanyang.
President Barrow said the counting plays a critical role in guiding planning, programme implementation, policy formulation, and monitoring development progress in line with the National Development Plans. “Data is important in decentralisation because it guides the Government in every aspect of decentralisation,” he added.
The Head of State appealed for public support in gathering information for the 2024 census, noting the significant role of the enumerators in getting correct data. “I called on all Gambians to be supportive and get counted.”
During the visit, President Barrow thanked the GBOS management and staff for ensuring the successful conduct of census activities in the country.
The Gambia is reaping the benefits of digitalisation and using digital recording to collect and process data for the 2024 Population and Housing Census. The digital census will enable the Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBOS) to produce more accurate and timely statistics.
