Gambians will remember that months ago, the Open Gambia Platform (OG) raised the alarm about how the Barrow administrates corrupt ministers led by Vice President Mohammed Jallow introduced a new company called NIRO Ground and Air Catering Service to take over the operations of the Gambia International Airlines (GIA) State Own enterprise that dominated the business for over four decades.
The latest incident at the Banjul International Airport (BIA), an ASKY aeroplane stranded on the tarmac due to a failed Air starter problem and NIRO’s inability to rescue the flight, vindicated OG’s coverage of NIRO’s incompetence in handling the airport’s operations services, as it happened previously until the GIA bailed them out.
On Friday the 07th, the ASKY flight landed in the Gambia and was supposed to fly out Saturday the 08th. However, the aircraft wouldn’t start due to Fail Airstarts, which led to NIRO, their ground handling service provider, connecting their GROUND HANDLING UNIT equipment to start the plane. This failed because NIRO only had a piece of old AIRSTARTER UNIT equipment that didn’t work most of the time. This led ASKY to operate another aircraft to cover the route, but passengers and crews scheduled to fly out on the stranded aircraft were still logged at the hotel, waiting for the aeroplane to be fixed.
Our contact at BIA informed us that NIRO is covering up the fact that their equipment is not fit for the proposed fixing of the problem with the ASKY aircraft, blaming it for a complex engine fault. They don’t want their incompetency exposed to the media, so after several attempts using their lousy equipment, they are trying to get GIA to come to the rescue as they did before.
