The Gambia Teachers’ Union (GTU), in collaboration with civil society members, has ramped up efforts to advocate for increased healthcare funding and the expansion of healthcare services. In a recent session held at the GTU Secretariat, key stakeholders, including members of civil society and lawmakers, gathered to present advocacy campaign messages aimed at bolstering healthcare investments.
The session, led by the General Secretary of GTU, Antoinette Corr-Jack, highlighted the union’s dedication to this cause, which is supported by the Organization of Trade Unions in West Africa. Corr-Jack passionately urged lawmakers to leverage their legislative authority to prioritize healthcare investment, emphasizing that healthcare is a fundamental human right.
“We believe that access to quality healthcare is not just a privilege but a fundamental human right,” Corr-Jack stated. “With the backing of the Organization of Trade Unions in West Africa, we are steadfast in our campaign to ensure that more resources are allocated to healthcare. We call upon our lawmakers to champion this cause in their legislative sessions.”
Hon. Amadou Camara, National Assembly Member for the Nianija Constituency and Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Health, responded positively to the advocacy messages. He assured the GTU and civil society members of his commitment to advancing the call for increased healthcare funding within the National Assembly.
“As representatives of the people, it is our duty to advocate for better healthcare services. I assure you of our unwavering commitment to push for more healthcare funding and ensure that this issue remains a priority in our legislative agenda,” Camara affirmed.
The session marks a significant step in the GTU’s ongoing efforts to bring about meaningful change in The Gambia’s healthcare system, emphasizing the vital role of legislative support in achieving this goal.
