The National Council for Civic Education – The Gambia (NCCE) has successfully launched the second phase of its District Tribunal Training Program, marking a significant step towards strengthening the justice system at the local level. This phase of the program, inaugurated over the weekend, aims to equip tribunal members with the essential knowledge and skills required to administer fair and efficient justice.
The NCCE’s initiative focuses on several critical areas, including land disputes, family issues (such as sexual and gender-based violence), inheritance matters, human rights, and minor criminal offenses. By addressing these areas, the training program ensures that tribunal members are well-prepared to handle a wide range of cases that affect the daily lives of community members.
District tribunals play a vital role in providing accessible and affordable justice, particularly for those living in rural areas. By enhancing the capacity of these tribunals, the NCCE is contributing to a more equitable justice system that serves the needs of all Gambians.
The second phase of the training program kicked off in Sandu District in the Upper River Region (#URR), with Chief Junu Bah and his tribunal members participating. This involvement highlights the commitment of local leaders to improving the quality of justice delivered in their communities.
In a statement, the NCCE expressed its optimism about the impact of the training program: “We are confident that this initiative will significantly enhance the ability of district tribunals to resolve disputes fairly and efficiently. By empowering tribunal members with the right tools and knowledge, we are building a stronger foundation for justice at the local level.”
The NCCE’s dedication to civic education and justice reform is evident through initiatives like the District Tribunal Training Program. As the second phase progresses, it is expected to further strengthen the judicial framework, ensuring that justice is not only delivered but also accessible to all.
With continued support and participation from local leaders and community members, the NCCE’s efforts promise to make a lasting positive impact on the justice system in The Gambia.
