In a groundbreaking event, the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), in collaboration with Clean Earth Gambia, partners, and donors, launched a caravan in Basse aimed at advocating for youth participation in transitional justice, governance, reconciliation, peace-building, and climate action. This first-of-its-kind initiative in the country marks a significant milestone in empowering the youth to take an active role in shaping their future.
The event was a resounding success, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Clean Earth Gambia and the unwavering support of various partners and donors. The caravan not only highlighted the importance of youth involvement in transitional justice and governance but also underscored the critical issue of climate change.
“Climate change isn’t a myth or a concern of a particular group; it’s a collective responsibility,” emphasized a representative from ICTJ. “As youths, it is our duty to ensure the deceleration of climate change and manage its effects on our ecosystem. The future belongs to us, and we must protect it from perishing in the hands of a few.”
The event featured workshops, discussions, and activities designed to educate and engage the youth on climate change and its impacts. Participants were encouraged to adopt resilient and healthy practices to combat climate change, ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations.
“Our children need the ecosystem, even if we feel we don’t, just as our parents ensured we had our fair share,” added a Clean Earth Gambia spokesperson. “Campaigns, advocacies, and sensitizations towards combating climate change must be enshrined in our every action. Together, we can make a greater difference.”
The caravan’s success in Basse is a testament to the potential of youth when mobilized for a cause. It serves as a call to action for more young people to join the movement, embracing their role in transitional justice and environmental stewardship. The event’s organizers remain hopeful that this initiative will spark a sustained effort towards a just, inclusive, and environmentally conscious future.
