With the support of UN-Habitat, the Banjul City Council is currently hosting a two-day stakeholder consultation forum on the 18th and 19th of July 2024. The purpose of the forum is to develop the Action-Oriented Voluntary Local Review for Banjul at the Prime Atlantic Hotel, Banjul. This initiative will assist the council in prioritizing its development goals.
During the two-day forum, the results of the data analysis will be presented, highlighting key findings and providing insights into areas that require more effort.
In her speech, the mayor of Banjul City Council, Rohey Malick Lowe, asserted that the two-day forum will provide the participants with an opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue to identify their priorities for building a city they can be proud of. She discussed at length the numerous developments the city has undergone under her dynamic leadership, noting that she does not work in a dictatorial way but rather engages everyone to build a more inclusive and sustainable Banjul. The Lord Mayor emphasized that she remains vigilant in the fight against climate change and highlighted that the success of their endeavors largely depends on collaboration.
The expected outcome includes the selection of key areas for action based on the data presented (stakeholder input ), engagement and involvement of stakeholders in sustainable development efforts in the city of Banjul, Increased awareness and understanding of the city’s progress in suitable development, Development of strategies to address gaps and challenges and continued collaboration and involvement towards realizing the SDG’s for the city of Banjul.
According to the concept note, The Action-Oriented Voluntary Local Review (VLR) of Banjul is a forward-looking analysis of the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the city. The development of the VLR enables Banjul to identify city priorities based on empirical data and extensive community consultations.
The framework of a pilot project that aims to advance inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development through the localization of the SDGs in Banjul. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), and the United Cities and Local Governments Association (UCLG), under the coordination of UNRCO, are collaborating to assist Banjul in its efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level.
