As part of the global efforts to combat climatic shocks, the people of Sutukonding Villagers under the leadership of VDC Chairperson Mr. Dembo Keita recently turned out in their large numbers to grow different species of indigenous trees in their community forest. The community recognizes the urgent need to address land degradation in the region due to erosion and persistent drought which are a consequence of human activities such as conversion of land for agricultural production and bush burning.
The initiative was supported by Department of Forestry, IOM, S&D Farm, Sutukonding Development Association and Green Savers.
The VDC Chairman highlighted the significant roles that forest plays in terms of climate change mitigation, tourist attraction and livelihood generation which in effects boast both the local and national economy. He also urged stakeholders such as ; FAO Gambia, UN Agencies in The Gambia, ROOTS Project, Ministry of Environmental, NGOs, CSOs like Green Up Gambia, to support this crusade to ensure it continuity and sustainability.
