It is with deep sorrow that the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies announce the passing of Hon. Justice Emmanuel Olayinka Ayoola, a distinguished legal mind, human rights advocate, and a stalwart of justice in Africa, who passed away on 20th August 2024 at the age of 90. He was a devoted Chairperson of the Governing Council of the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) from 2001 to 2010.
Born on October 27, 1933, in Nigeria, Justice Ayoola’s illustrious career spanned several decades and continents. After receiving his education at Ilesha Grammar School, Lincoln College, University of Oxford, and passing his Bar Examination at Lincoln’s Inn in London, he was called to the English Bar in 1958. Upon returning to Nigeria, he was admitted to the Supreme Court of Nigeria as a Barrister and Solicitor in 1959.
Justice Ayoola’s legal career took him to various parts of the world. He served as a judge of the High Court of Oyo State, Nigeria, and later as Justice of Appeal at the Gambia Court of Appeal. His contributions to justice and human rights were further recognized when he became Chief Justice of The Gambia in 1983, a position he held until 1992. His judicial career also included service as Justice of Appeal in the Seychelles Court of Appeal and as President of Seychelles’ highest court.
Throughout his career, Justice Ayoola was a tireless advocate for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. His dedication to justice extended beyond the courtroom as he served as the Chairperson on the Governing Council of the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS), where he contributed significantly to advancing human rights and democratic governance across the African continent. His leadership, vast experience, and unwavering commitment to human rights will remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
In addition to his legal pursuits, Justice Ayoola was a United Nations Human Rights Fellow and held a deep love for classical and choral music, as well as strolling, which kept him grounded and balanced throughout his life.
Hon. Justice Emmanuel Olayinka Ayoola will be remembered as a towering figure in the fight for justice, democracy, and human rights in Africa. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who champion these values.
