Some people may have passed away long ago, but their legacies continue to live on, more vibrant than the lives of those still walking the earth. One such person is Deyda Hydara, a name that resonates deeply in the hearts and minds of many, even 20 years after his untimely death.
Deyda Hydara was a highly respected journalist who dedicated his life to seeking, sharing, and telling the truth without fear or favor. His unwavering commitment to press freedom and freedom of expression remains a shining example for generations to come. The continued existence and relevance of The POINT Newspaper Gambia, which he co-founded, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy.
As one of the founding fathers of our great Union and a former president of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), Deyda Hydara championed the rights of journalists and fought tirelessly for freedom of expression. His sacrifice reminds us of the critical role of a free press in building a just and democratic society.
I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Uncle Pap Saine, Deyda’s great brother, and comrade, for his unwavering resilience in upholding Deyda’s legacy despite the challenges and threats he has faced over the years.
As young journalists and advocates, we must learn to appreciate and preserve the legacy that Deyda Hydara built. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that his work and ideals are never forgotten but instead nurtured and sustained for future generations.
May Allah (SWT) continue to grant Deyda Hydara eternal rest in Jannah, and may his legacy continue to inspire and flourish.
