On Sunday, Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko visited Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Senegalese government and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC). The signing followed three days of negotiations aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in the Casamance region.
Prime Minister Sonko confirmed the conclusion of the talks, emphasizing that the MoU represents an important development in the peace process between the MFDC and the Senegalese government.
The MFDC has been engaged in an insurgency since the 1980s, seeking greater autonomy for the Casamance region. Despite previous peace efforts, including ceasefires and negotiations, sporadic violence has continued in the area. The latest MoU is seen as a renewed effort by both sides to find a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
