The Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services has issued a stern response to a recent publication by the activist group Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), accusing the group of misrepresenting remarks made by Information Minister Dr. Ismaila Ceesay during a recent media appearance.
During his weekly update on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez on West Coast Radio, Minister Ceesay discussed the 2019 submission of the Janneh Commission report, which investigated the financial activities of former President Yahya Jammeh and his associates. The Minister clarified that while the Commission submitted a comprehensive nine volume report, it did not include a separate, detailed report on the sale of forfeited assets at that time.
The Ministry emphasized that the Minister did not deny the existence of a list of buyers and sellers of those assets. Instead, he pointed out that such a list was not part of the initial report submission. The Ministry reaffirmed that the published list from the Ministry of Justice is genuine and will be further scrutinized during the ongoing National Assembly inquiry.
GALA’s publication, titled “A Nation Misled by the State,” alleged that Minister Ceesay called the list misleading and claimed no such buyer/seller list existed, accusations the Ministry strongly denies, calling them a “serious misquotation and distortion.”
Condemning what it described as the deliberate spread of misinformation, the Ministry urged civic groups and media outlets to engage responsibly in national discourse and uphold the principles of truth and accountability.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to transparency, calling on all stakeholders to prioritize factual accuracy in public communications.
