In a bold and controversial statement during an exclusive interview with SS MEDIA TV’s “Abay4 with ML” show, Honorable Bakary K. Badjie, National Assembly Member for Foni Bintang and declared aspirant for the 2026 Presidential election, strongly criticized the government’s initiative to send a small group of Gambian youths to Spain for employment.
Referring to the program as a “scam,” Hon. Badjie expressed strong disapproval of the government’s decision to select only around 50 people out of thousands of hopeful applicants. “I rejected this decision from the beginning,” he said. “It is a trick by the government to scam the youths.”
When asked why the National Assembly has remained silent on the issue, Hon. Badjie accused the government of profiting from the situation. He alleged that the program has led many young Gambians to rush for passports, generating significant income for the government through application fees. “This is not about providing opportunity — it’s about exploiting the desperation of our youths,” he added.
He emphasized that while he is not against Gambians travelling abroad, he believes the country’s youth should focus on working to improve the nation instead of abandoning it. “No one should be pressured or frustrated into leaving their own country,” Hon. Badjie said. “Gambians must not leave their future in the hands of a government whose only goal is to enslave the youth.”
As the 2026 elections approach, Hon. Badjie’s firm stance is expected to fuel further political debates, particularly on youth empowerment, job creation, and governance.
