The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad wishes to inform the public that the Honourable Minister, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, has officially tendered his resignation from office.
Dr. Tangara has been appointed as the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission in Mali and the Sahel, and will also serve as Head of the African Union Mission for Mali and the Sahel (MISAHEL), based in Bamako.
Dr. Tangaraโs departure marks the end of a distinguished tenure as The Gambiaโs Minister of Foreign Affairs, a role he first assumed in 2010 and held across three separate terms, most recently from 2018 to 2025. His cumulative service makes him the first Gambian to serve three times in this role and one of the longest-serving foreign ministers on the African continent.
Under his leadership, The Gambia saw a renewed presence and influence on the international stage. Notable milestones during his tenure include:
โช๏ธThe successful hosting of the 15th Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), positioning The Gambia as a significant voice within the Muslim world.
โช๏ธThe countryโs assumption of the chairmanship of the OIC is a testament to its growing diplomatic stature.
โช๏ธDr. Tangaraโs instrumental role in The Gambiaโs leadership within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), including The Gambiaโs assumption rotating presidency of the ECOWAS Commission.
โช๏ธThe strengthening of bilateral and multilateral ties globally and further consolidating The Gambiaโs diplomatic engagements.
โช๏ธAdvocacy for human rights, transitional justice, rule of law, and democratic governance, which enhanced the countryโs international image following the 2017 political transition.
The Ministry expresses its deep appreciation for Dr. Tangaraโs dedicated service and unwavering commitment to the country. His contribution to The Gambiaโs foreign policy and global partnerships has been both transformative and enduring.
We extend our heartfelt contributions, and best wishes to H.E. Dr. Mamadou Tangara as he embarks on this new and prestigious chapter of his diplomatic career with the African Union.
