Formed in the 1970s and revived in 2009 under the leadership of Mr. Omar J. Ndure, the primary objective of GATE is to complement Government’s efforts in improving the Teaching and learning of English language and Literature in Gambian Schools.
The Third AGM funded mainly by The Gambia Teachers’ Union (GTU and Education for All Network (EFANET), was graced by members of the Association, incoming and outgoing executive.
Held at the Regional Education Directorate-1 Hall, Kanifing, The third AGM of the association served as an important platform for the members to review the activities and financial performance of the Association during the period under review and map out a way forward.
Mr. Omar J. Ndure, the outgoing Chairperson of GATE and the only remaining active founding member of the association since its creation in the 1970s gave a brief historical account of the Association.
He noted that, in the mid 1970s a group of like-minded English language Teachers who were responsible for the marking of the English language Paper (2) Common Entrance Examination scripts came together to form the Association of Teachers of English, making it the oldest Subject Teachersโ Association in The Gambia.
While thanking MoBSE, GTU, EFANET, and the Membership of the Association for the support and collaboration availed to him and his executive throughout their tenure in office, he challenged the new executive and membership to build on the gains and make GATE a more vibrant Association.
