During a two-day review and validation of the Cherno Jallow Charter of Ethics for Journalists, Sheriff Saidykhan, Vice President of the Gambia Press Union, emphasised that the development of a new code aims to align the work of media practitioners with current realities and emerging issues.
Mr. Saidykhan delivered this statement on behalf of Madam Isatou Keita, President of the Gambia Press Union.
“This code of conduct promotes responsible journalism and upholds higher standards of professionalism in the gathering, processing, and disseminating news and information by journalists across all media categories: print, broadcast, and online/multimedia platforms.”
The draft Charter addresses some of the most immediate challenges faced by journalists today, including issues related to AI and persons with disabilities, among others.
It is important to note that this journalism Charter is named after veteran journalist Cherno Jallow, who prioritised ethical journalism throughout his teaching and work.
Approximately 40 participants took part in the review and validation of the new draft Charter, which took place from August 6th to 7th, 2025. The event was organised by International IDEA in collaboration with the Gambia Press Union, with funding from the European Union.
This initiative is part of the EU-funded Consolidation of Democratic Dispensation in the Gambia (CODE) project implemented by International IDEA.
