The Office of the President has clarified that Auditor-General Modou Ceesay has declined his recent appointment as Minister of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment.
Mr. Ceesay was called to the State House on 10th September and informed of his appointment, which he initially accepted and for which he received a formal letter. Following that development, Mr. Cherno Amadou Sowe was appointed as the new Auditor-General.
However, in a letter dated 11th September and received on 12th September, Mr. Ceesay formally rejected the ministerial role, stating his preference to remain Auditor-General.
According to the Presidency, the decision to appoint Mr. Ceesay as Minister was based on his qualifications and experience in the public sector, finance, and investment. The statement stressed that the appointment was not intended to interfere with the independence of the National Audit Office or its publications.
The Government has congratulated Mr. Cherno Amadou Sowe on his appointment as Auditor-General and pledged its full cooperation with him.
The statement further reaffirmed that the Government of The Gambia, under President Barrow’s leadership, remains committed to the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and the sound management of public finances.
