
The Executive Coordinator of Banjul Hon. Ebrima Jawo today paid a visit to the site of a collapsed historic building at the beach, behind the Christian cemetery _ABC area in Banjul.
The structure, which gave way yesterday during heavy rain and strong winds, the ABC structure has long been a landmark in the city and is under the care of the Banjul Heritage operating under the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC).
During the collapse, a young man named Babucarr Jallow was caught under the rubble. He was swiftly rescued by the Gambia Fire and Rescue Service and is currently receiving medical treatment at the EFSTH.
Speaking at the site, the governor expressed deep concern over the incident and extended good will message to the family of Babucarr Jallow. He also commended the fire service for their rapid and courageous efforts in rescuing the young man.
The Executive Coordinator visiting with officials of the Physical Planning Department expressed deep concern over the incident, especially given the location’s popularity among students who often gather there after school hours.
“This is a wake-up call,” the Executive Coordinator stated during his visit. “We must prioritize the safety of our children and the public around these historic sites. While we value our cultural heritage, it is equally important that these structures are properly maintained and assessed regularly for safety.
Officials from the NCAC assured that a structural review of historical buildings in the area is underway. The Physical planning emphasized their commitment to both preserving the city’s heritage and ensuring public safety.
As the rainy season continues, authorities are urging the public to avoid old or weakened buildings and to report any signs of structural damage to local officials.
The Executive Coordinator, hon. Jawo concluded by saying that to ensure public safety and preserve Banjul’s heritage, it is recommended that all stakeholders initiate a city-wide safety audit of all historic buildings, particularly those are frequented by the public. Immediate action should be taken to secure or restore unsafe structures, in collaboration with the necessary stakeholders including the National Centre for Arts and Culture.
