His Excellency President Adama Barrow, today, graced the opening of the 20th Triennial Conference of Magistrates and Judges Association under the theme “Innovations in Judicial Practice: Embracing Change for a Better Future.”
The event provides an opportunity for sharing experiences, best practices, and devising ways of transforming the judicial systems to be more adaptive, innovative, and functional.
In his address, President Barrow reaffirms The Gambia’s continuous commitment to institutional reforms, judicial independence, and the shared Commonwealth values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
The Chief Justice of The Gambia, Hassan B. Jallow expressed appreciation for President Barrow and the government’s continuous support in strengthening the independence of the judiciary with resources to enhance efficiency.
It is worth noting that The Gambia is making significant strides in promoting and protecting fundamental human rights as well as legal and institutional reforms. These include the establishment of an Anti-Corruption Commission, a Reparations Commission to compensate victims of past human rights violations, and a Special Mechanism Act to guarantee justice and accountability for victims of the past regime, Access to Information Act, and the Torture Act.
In addition, the Barrow administration has eliminated all discriminatory laws against women, the Persons With Disabilities and other vulnerable members of society. These are milestone legislations introduced by the current government to promote reconciliation, freedom, equality, and justice.
