Hon. Councillor MC Cham Jr. has announced his resignation from the United Democratic Party (UDP), citing a loss of alignment with the party’s values and direction. His move comes shortly after former Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda also broke ranks with the UDP to form a new political movement.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Cham explained that his decision followed “careful reflection” and was not born out of hostility. He said the UDP no longer reflects the principles of democracy, justice, and renewal that motivated him to join the party.
“I joined the UDP because I believed in its vision of democracy, justice, and renewal for The Gambia. However, the party’s current direction no longer reflects the values and principles that inspired me to serve under its banner,” Cham said.
While expressing gratitude for the friendships and experiences gained within the UDP, Cham emphasized that his loyalty remains to the Gambian people. He said he would continue his political engagement outside the UDP, in pursuit of “bold renewal and genuine commitment to the aspirations of the people.”
Cham also wished the party well in its future endeavors but underscored his dedication to democracy, good governance, and development.
His resignation is being widely interpreted as a show of support for Talib Bensouda’s newly formed movement, United for Change, signaling further cracks within the UDP as the political landscape shifts ahead of 2026.
