On the sidelines of the 151st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Seedy S. K. Njie, participated in a high-level dialogue hosted by the IPU Gender unit.
The dialogue, held under the auspices of the IPU’s Gender Partnership Group led by Secretary General Mr. Martin Chungong, focused on women’s representation and participation in Parliament and other critical decision-making cadres.
Deputy Speaker Njie was accompanied by a delegation of National Assembly members, including Hon. Assan Touray, Hon. Kebba Jallow, Hon. Musa Cham, Hon. Fatou Cham, and Ms. Musukuta Faal, Secretary to the delegation.
The meeting’s primary objective was to receive first-hand information from the Gambian delegation regarding women political participation and possible collaboration between the IPU and The National Assembly of The Gambia in advancing female participation in elections and decision-making. This collaboration aims to enhance the cause of women for inclusive development.
Deputy Speaker Njie commended the IPU for its continuous support and reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to the global parliamentary body’s ideals and principles. He also sought the IPU’s assistance in engaging stakeholders to promote greater female participation in elections.
The IPU, in turn, applauded the delegation and The Gambia for advancing the cause of women. They assured the delegation of their ongoing commitment to supporting The Gambia National Assembly in advancing democracy, good governance, and the rule of law.
