The Gambia Police Force expresses disappointment over an incident in Nema Kunku where a group of young men clashed with police officers after refusing to stop playing football on a public space, despite repeated warnings to desist from obstructing and endangering public safety.
The Police are equally concerned by the conduct of The Gambia Talents Promotion TV for interviewing individuals on the issue in a manner that appeared to portray police officers as being at fault for enforcing the law. The GPF reminds all media institutions of their civic duty to report responsibly and to seek clarification from official sources before publishing or broadcasting stories that may mislead the public or undermine law enforcement efforts.
The GPF reiterates that law and order is the foundation of every peaceful society, and police officers are mandated by law to maintain it. Their lawful instructions must therefore be respected at all times. Thus, all media outlets are urged to cooperate and coordinate with the police on matters relating to public security to promote accurate information and responsible journalism.
