President Adama Barrow has dismissed protests as “useless” while urging Gambians to unite for the country’s development during a ceremony welcoming more than 800 new members who defected to his National People’s Party (NPP).
Speaking before a large crowd of new party Bundung Bureau, Barrow said the cross-carpeting signified Gambians’ trust in his leadership and a shared vision for national progress. He told supporters that The Gambia could easily develop if citizens set aside hatred and personal attacks.
“Developing The Gambia is very easy if we come together as one people and put an end to hatred and attacks against one another,” Barrow said.
“All these protests serve no purpose, and the daily attacks on people are equally unhelpful; they do not serve the best interests of The Gambia.”
He described his party as open and inclusive, emphasizing that every member, old or new, is equal.
“This cross-carpeting is very special, and I want to inform you that everyone is equal in this party because it is a Gambian party. Anyone who joins this party does so to contribute to the development of this country,” he stated.
Mr Barrow further defended his government’s record on democracy, saying critics who accuse his administration of failing to deliver are being dishonest.
“You may say you don’t like Adama Barrow and the NPP, but if you claim that this government has not restored democracy, you are simply making a false statement and living in self-denial,” he said.
