The leader of the opposition National Unity Party, Dr Lamin J Darbo, has issued a strong warning to what he described as individuals looting public funds, vowing strict punishment for anyone found guilty of corruption.
Speaking at a large political rally in his hometown of Gunjur, Dr Darbo told supporters that his leadership would prioritise transparency and accountability.
“My leadership will ensure transparency, but anyone found stealing or violating the laws of the country will be dealt with according to the law,” he said, drawing loud applause from the crowd.
Dr Darbo, a UK-trained Gambian lawyer, entered the country’s political arena after resigning from the United Democratic Party (UDP) a few months ago.
He was among a group of senior UDP members who challenged the party leader, Ousainou Darboe, in a bid to lead the party into the 2026 presidential election.
He also responded to critics who have accused him of rushing his presidential ambitions, dismissing the claims as self-serving.
“Those saying that Lamin J Darbo is in a hurry to become president do not love this country; they are only pursuing their own interests,” he added.
