Police in Senegambia, on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, commenced investigations into reports of the alleged circulation of suspected counterfeit British Pounds Sterling at some Bureau de Change outlets within the Senegambia area.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two individuals, who arrived separately in The Gambia from the United Kingdom in December 2025, were in possession of sums of British Pounds Sterling. It is alleged that portions of the currency were subsequently presented for exchange at multiple Bureau de Change outlets along the Senegambia Strip.
Following complaints lodged by affected operators, Police investigations led to the recovery of £6,040 (Six Thousand and Forty Pounds Sterling). An outstanding balance of £460 (Four Hundred and Sixty Pounds Sterling) remains unaccounted for, and efforts to trace the remaining amount are ongoing.
The investigation further established that eight (8) Bureau de Change outlets were affected. While some complainants were unable to positively identify individuals involved, others provided information that assisted investigators in advancing the case. Statements were obtained from persons of interest as part of the ongoing investigation.
In the course of the investigation, a third individual was temporarily detained to assist Police with inquiries. However, based on evidence gathered and statements reviewed, no indication was established linking the individual to the suspected offence beyond social association. He was subsequently released, as investigations did not support his involvement.
Investigations remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the matter, including verification of the recovered currency, accountability for the outstanding amount, and appropriate procedural direction in accordance with the law.
The Gambia Police Force assures the public that the matter is being handled with due diligence and professionalism and will provide further updates as investigations progress.
