Today, the National Assembly made history by holding its inaugural press briefing prior to the First Ordinary Session of the 2026 Legislative Year. This highly-anticipated event took place at the National Assembly Auditorium and featured the esteemed Speaker and Clerk outlining an ambitious agenda focused on reform for the upcoming session. This marks a significant step in the Assembly’s commitment to an Open Parliament policy.
During the briefing, Mr. Kalipha MM Mbye, the Clerk of the National Assembly, provided a comprehensive overview of the session’s procedures and administrative framework. “A modern Parliament not only creates laws, but also effectively communicates, anticipates, and prepares,” stated the Clerk, conveying the purpose behind this technical media engagement.
The Right Honourable Speaker, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, warmly welcomed members of the press and emphasized the briefing’s importance as a vital initiative to bridge the gap between the legislature and the media. “For the very first time, we are holding a structured media engagement before the start of an Ordinary Session. This ensures that our legislative priorities are conveyed with transparency and clarity.”
The briefing outlined the detailed schedule and key legislation for the First Ordinary Session of the National Assembly in the 2026 Legislative Year, which is scheduled to take place from Monday, March 02 to Wednesday, April 01, 2026.
The press briefing ended with a question and answer session, where the Speaker, Clerk, and representatives from the Majority and Minority Leaders Office addressed inquiries from the press. This further solidified the Assembly’s dedication to open and accessible dialogue.
