Rohey Malick Lowe, the President of REFELA (Network of Locally Elected Women in Africa), delivered an impactful speech at the REFELA National Conference, urging a collaborative effort towards women’s empowerment in Africa.
Lowe warmly welcomed all attendees and the esteemed guest of honor, stressing that achieving gender equality is not solely the responsibility of women, but a duty that involves the whole community.
She emphasized the significant role of women in strengthening communities, promoting development, and fostering social cohesion. However, she also acknowledged the persistent barriers that hinder women’s participation in leadership, decision-making, and economic opportunities.
Lowe highlighted the importance of the conference as a platform for dialogue, partnership, and cooperation to promote inclusivity, gender equality, and increased representation of women in governance and public life. She also expressed gratitude towards government institutions, partners, and stakeholders who support education, community development, and equal opportunities for women and girls.
The President of REFELA reminded everyone that empowering women is not only a matter of justice, but also crucial for sustainable development. She believes that when women are empowered, communities prosper, and nations become stronger.
In her closing remarks, Lowe urged a continued commitment to policies and initiatives that ensure women are not left behind due to inequality or lack of opportunity. She called upon all stakeholders to work together in building a more inclusive and equitable Africa.
