Former Lands Minister Sheriff Abba Sanyang and six co accused have been granted bail by Justice Jaiteh of the High Court after being arraigned on nine charges of land corruption and fraud. The case concerns the alleged illegal sale of portions of forfeited Kassa Kunda land, previously owned by former President Yahya Jammeh, generating D13.1 million in total.
Sanyang faces charges of Abuse of Office and Giving False Information, while the other six accused face criminal trespass and obtaining goods by false pretence. All pleaded not guilty.
The court set bail at D1 million for Sanyang and D2.2 million each for the co accused, with each required to provide a Gambian surety owning property of equivalent value. Justice Jaiteh emphasized that bail is the rule, detention the exception for non-capital offences.
The case is adjourned for hearings on April 20, 21, and 27, 2026.
