The National People’s Party (NPP) has dismissed allegations by former Vice President Fatoumatta Jallow‑Tambajang that the party is using funds from the European Union to finance its women’s enterprise initiative.
In a statement, the NPP described the claims as “misleading and factually incorrect,” insisting that the NPP Women Interest-Free Fund is financed entirely through contributions from party members and supporters, alongside support from a partner financial institution. The party clarified that the initiative was launched publicly at a rally and that the funding arrangement involves a 50–50 contribution between the NPP and Salam Financial Services.
The party further stressed that no EU funds have been allocated to the Government of The Gambia for such a loan scheme, adding that international partners typically do not finance projects tied directly to political parties.
According to the NPP, the women’s enterprise fund does not use any public money and is intended to support the economic empowerment of women within the party and its allied groups. The statement also reaffirmed the party’s support for the leadership of President Adama Barrow, citing his commitment to transparency and women’s economic advancement.
The party called on political figures to verify information before making public statements that could mislead the public.
