A glaring contradiction exists between the value placed on education by the Adama Barrow’s government and the monetary compensation provided to those that delivered it. I read the Vice President of The Gambia saying that, teachers earned more than the National Assembly Members of The Gambia which is a cruel irony and a mockery to the teachers in The Gambia. Where are those teachers that earned more than the National Assembly and which payroll are they being paid. The Vice President statement was an insult to the teachers in the country because it was not the reality on the ground. His statement was a deliberate disinformation because the salary of one Member of Parliament can pay 10 teachers in this country.
The behavior of the Vice President not only reveals a profound lack of empathy but also highlights a misunderstanding of the societal contribution of educators and the structural nature of low teachers pay.
The Vice President was a teacher and left the teaching field to search for a better pay job and the least expected was to be honest with his utterances. Teachers have been consistently less paid compared to other professions with the current state of the economy teachers are battling to manage a salary that could barely keep them 5 days.
Gambian teachers are very hard working and they have profound passion for the job but are least motivated by the small salary that couldn’t handle their responsibilities at the end of the day.
