A driver who allegedly drove off with a police officer clinging to the bonnet of a moving vehicle during a document check in Banjul has been charged with attempted murder, reckless and negligent acts, disobedience of lawful orders, and common assault.
The accused, Abdul Wahabu Jobarteh, appeared before the Banjul Magistrate Court over the incident which reportedly began on 5 June 2026 at Hagan Street, Banjul, and ended in Manjai.
Court proceedings state that Sergeant 4485 Alagie Badjie of the Gambia Police Force had stopped the vehicle for inspection when the situation escalated after the driver allegedly failed to produce his vehicle documents.
It is alleged that the driver then drove off at speed while the officer remained on the bonnet of the vehicle, continuing through traffic and placing the officerโs life in danger.
The vehicle involved is registered BJL 6726 J.
Prosecutors told the court that the manner of driving was reckless and created a serious risk to human life, forming the basis of the attempted murder charge under Section 168 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025.
He is also charged with reckless and negligent acts under Section 109(a), disobedience of lawful orders for allegedly failing to present documents when requested, and common assault related to contact between the officer and parts of the vehicle during the incident.
The dramatic episode went viral online after footage emerged showing a police officer clinging to a moving car, sparking public debate on enforcement tactics and road safety.
