According to partial results announced by the Electoral Commission, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has 99.15% of the vote so far, with approximately 79% of ballots counted.
He is poised to secure another five-year term with a sweeping victory as most of Monday’s votes have been tallied.
Again, the 66-year-old faced no meaningful opposition, as leading figures were banned. His two opponents collectively shared less than 1% of the vote.
Mr Kagame expressed gratitude to the people of Rwanda for their trust during his address at the headquarters of his Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) party.
“These are not just figures, even if it was 100%, these are not just numbers. [They] show the trust, which is most important,” Mr Kagame said.
His opponents are environmentalist Frank Habineza and ex-journalist and government adviser Philippe Mpayimana, who have 0.53% and 0.32% support, respectively.
