The Independent Electoral Commission has announced that its biometric verification system has detected 24,058 suspected cases of double voter registration following the recently concluded voter registration exercise.
The disclosure was made by IEC Chairman Joseph Colley during the Commissionโs monthly stakeholder meeting, where he confirmed that a total of 212,095 people were registered nationwide between 8 April and 24 May 2026.
According to the figures presented, 96,581 of those registered were men, while 115,504 were women. The Commission also recorded 8,169 voter transfers to new polling stations during the same period.
Mr Colley said the suspected cases are now undergoing adjudication to determine whether the individuals involved had indeed registered more than once. He reminded the public that double registration is a criminal offence under Gambian electoral law and warned that anyone found culpable could face prosecution or be barred from voting.
The IEC Chairman further explained that the provisional voter list will be subjected to the revising court process before the verified names are added to the national voter register compiled in 2021.
The announcement comes as preparations intensify ahead of the 2026 elections and underscores the Commissionโs efforts to protect the credibility of the voter register while ensuring that all eligible Gambians are able to take part in the democratic process.
