In the wake of the deteriorating situation in Senegal, the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres expressed concern, “calls for calm” and “restraint” in Senegal where violence erupted after opponent Ousmane Sonko was sentenced to two years in prison, one of his spokespersons said on Friday
“He strongly condemns the use of violence, calls for calm, and urges all actors to exercise restraint,” Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman for Antonio Guterres, told reporters
Seneweb, one of the SSenegaleselocal media monitoring the violent protest, earlier reported that 9 people were dead including a police officer.

Meanwhile, The West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, has condemned the current and unfolding situation in Senegal via a statement issued on Friday.
Similar statements by the African Union have since been released all urging for a peaceful resolution to end the violence.
