In Janjabureh, Central River Region, National Council for Civic Education this morning, engaged Political party representatives and other stakeholders on the electoral laws, processes, and their role in the maintenance of peace in the post 2021-2023 electoral cycle.
The discussions were punctuated with an interactive presentation on Peacebuilding, the Role of political parties in maintaining peace, and the electoral laws and processes in the Gambia.
Deputy Governor CRR, Mr. Sainey Mbye, bemoaned the spread of dis/misinformation which can cause conflict and when turn violent conflict can retard the development processes of the country. The former parliamentarian further hailed the Gambian electoral processes calling it second to none. He called on all political stakeholders to come together and “build on our unique system and have the tolerance to achieve a peaceful society and our development goals.”
Interparty Committee Regional Chair, CRR, Mr. Memba Nanco, stated that our enjoyment of political rights is subject to the existing peace in the country. With hindsight, he went on, we can say the political awareness has improved tremendously because the past electoral cycle which was highly competitive passed peacefully.
Participants made recommendations aim to pave the way for more inclusive, transparent, and peaceful elections in the future.
