The High Court in Banjul has sentenced Saikou Bah to 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a five-year-old girl in Sinchu Alhagie.
The court heard that the incident happened in June 2021. The victim, now eight, identified Bah as the man who assaulted her.
A medical officer who examined the child also gave evidence, and the medical report was admitted in court.
The victim’s mother testified that her daughter reported the matter to her.
Bah denied the allegation and claimed he had been attacked by the victim’s family before being handed over to police. His wife also testified, but the court rejected their evidence.
Justice Jaiteh said the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and described the offence as serious because of the victim’s young age.
Bah was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
