Members of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters, the Select Committee on Gender, Health and Children, together with selected staff of the National Assembly, on Friday 13th February 2026 participated in a capacity building workshop held at the National Assembly Auditorium in Banjul.
The workshop focused on recommendations issued to The Gambia by the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, African Union treaty bodies, and other Special Mechanisms.
In line with section 100(1) of the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia, the National Assembly, as the supreme legislative body, plays a vital role in translating these international recommendations into concrete legislative and oversight actions. The Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters supports the Assembly in ensuring compliance by the Executive and other organs of the State with constitutional and international human rights obligations.
In her opening statement, Hon Fatoumatta Njai, Chairperson of the Select Committee on Gender, Health and Children said the engagement sought to improve Members’ understanding of the recommendations issued to The Gambia and enable them to analyse the challenges affecting implementation. “It is an avenue to strengthen our capacity to mainstream international recommendations into national legislation, policy and budgetary processes; and enhance collaboration with relevant UN agencies and civil society organisations”.
The National Human Rights Commission, which reports directly to the National Assembly in the discharge of its mandate, continues to work closely with the Assembly in strengthening parliamentary oversight on human rights compliance. The workshop forms part of broader efforts to ensure that international commitments are effectively domesticated and realised for the benefit of all Gambians.
