Chairman Yankuba Yanks Darboe issues a warning that the UDP is closely monitoring the ongoing supplementary voter registrations. According to reports, the IEC has handed over one Nigerian man to the Latriya Police Station on Friday. This raises concerns and prompts the question – is this a new stance adopted by the IEC, or are these actions specifically targeted towards Nigerians? It is crucial to remind the IEC of their responsibility under Section 13(3) of the Election Act 1996, which mandates them to only register individuals with valid Gambian documents as outlined in Section 13(2) of the same Act. This validity requirement not only pertains to the date of the document, but also the authenticity of the document itself, as well as the age of the bearer, who must be at least 18 years old. Therefore, it is imperative for the IEC to enforce these measures uniformly against all ineligible applicants attempting to register on our electoral roll.
