The quest for quality media content: GPU prexy addresses  MCG Dialogue with editors and managers

With support from Freedom House and USAID, The Media Council of the Gambia today begins a two-day forum for editors and managers at the Ocean Bay Hotel, Cape Point, Bakau.

The theme for the forum is” National  Dialogue on improving quality media content in the Gambia.”
Speaking at the dialogue, the president of the Gambia Press Union Muhammad  S Bah commended the Media Council of The Gambia for this great initiative. while appreciating  Freedom House and USAID for their support in this crusade.

“The Media Council was established by the Gambia Press Union as a self-regulatory body for journalists and media workers in the country.
Both the GPU and the MCG have been working together to create an environment that supports professionalism in the media industry and to empowers journalists and media professionals. By combining our resources, expertise, and networks, we wish to create innovative programs, training initiatives, and platforms that strengthen good quality journalism, enhance media literacy, and ensure journalists and media houses uphold their journalism principles and ensure responsible reporting.”

He added that the GPU/MCG collaboration seeks to address the evolving challenges faced by the media industry, including the rise of misinformation and disinformation (fake news). “We are working together to develop sustainable models for journalism, encourage diversity and inclusivity in media representation, and promote freedom of expression and independent journalism.”

The dialogue he stressed is very timely and relevant, noting that it’s important to engage media professionals on ethics and the promotion of good media content.
“Good media content plays a pivotal role in shaping society and influencing public opinion. It informs, educates, and entertains, catalyzing dialogue and understanding. With the proliferation of digital platforms, the demand for high-quality media content has never been greater. ”
“It is through good media content that we gain insights into diverse perspectives, uncover the truth, and challenge prevailing narratives. It has the power to inspire, evoke empathy, and spark change. By upholding journalistic integrity, promoting factual accuracy, and embracing diverse voices, good media content strengthens democracy, fosters critical thinking, and cultivates a well-informed and engaged citizenry. ”
The GPU president further stated that In an era of information overload, the importance of good media content cannot be overstated. because it is the cornerstone of an informed and enlightened society.

“In conclusion, the GPU is happy to be associated with an activity this important, and I wish to commend the MCG once again for the initiative and Freedom House and USAID for the invaluable support.
I also want to urge the participants to take this opportunity to actively participate in the discussions, interact and share ideas and experiences to have a very fruitful dialogue.”
