Today, 10th June 2026, His Excellency Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Mr. Musa Mbye and staff of the Gambian Embassy in China, visited two world-class institutions in Tianjin, Nankai University and Tianjin University.
At Nankai University, founded in 1919 and one of China’s top-ranked universities, the delegation learned about its renowned Human Rights Research Center, one of the first three national human rights education and training bases in China. The center has played a leading role in shaping China’s human rights discourse, contributing to national action plans, government white papers, and representing China at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The delegation then visited Tianjin University, China’s very first modern university, founded in 1895. Its School of Medicine has presided over more than 100 national key research programmes and holds over 100 national invention patents. Most impressively, the School has set three world records in non-invasive brain-computer interaction, with groundbreaking applications in treating neurological conditions including Alzheimer’s, depression, anxiety, stroke rehabilitation, and sensory disorders.
Speaking after the visits, Vice President Jallow underscored the significance of the engagements, noting that the delegation has learned enormously from the tour, spanning port management, environmental issues, human rights, and education. He confirmed that upon return, a Cabinet paper will be prepared to advance cooperation in these areas, with further discussions to be held with the Chinese Ambassador in Banjul.
His Excellency Vice President Jallow also revealed that His Excellency President Adam Barrow was personally keen for this visit to take place, reflecting the President’s commitment to deepening Gambia-China bilateral ties.
The Vice President highlighted the existing MOU between The Gambia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology and its Chinese counterpart as a strong foundation for collaboration particularly with institutions like Tianjin University and the Luban workshop. He also pointed to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital as a key partner for future medical research cooperation.
Two remarkable institutions. Endless possibilities for Gambia-China collaboration in education, research, and human development.
