The Basse Prosecution Unit has secured convictions in two separate criminal matters following proceedings before His Worship I. Dibba at the Basse Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, June 9.
In the first case, Gambian nationals Tijan Bah and Dawda Kanteh pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and cattle theft. The court imposed fines of D20,000 each for conspiracy and D50,000 each for cattle theft, with default custodial sentences of one and two years respectively. In addition, both men were ordered to pay compensation of D75,000 each or serve an extra two years in prison, with all default sentences to run consecutively.
In a separate matter, Muhammad Nemaga was convicted of killing an animal with intent to steal. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a fine of D50,000 or one year imprisonment in default. The court also ordered him to pay compensation of D30,000 or serve an additional one year in prison, with the default sentences to run consecutively.
The Gambia Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting offenders in accordance with the law, stressing that such measures are essential to deterring crime and enhancing public safety.
