Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainu Darboe has responded to President Adama Barrow’s congratulatory message following the party’s victory in the Massembeh Ward by-election. In his letter, Darboe expressed appreciation for the president’s message, noting that its tone aligns with UDP’s long-standing commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and political pluralism. He highlighted his party’s dedication to ensuring that democratic values are not only enshrined in the Constitution but also upheld in practice.
Darboe further urged President Barrow, as both the leader of the National People’s Party (NPP) and Head of State, to reinforce democratic principles within the country’s electoral system. He called for impartiality in the appointment of officials to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and stressed the need for free, fair, and transparent elections. According to Darboe, Gambian elections should be peaceful, allowing both winners and losers to accept the results with mutual respect.
With the upcoming appointment of a new IEC chairman, the UDP leader encouraged Barrow to choose a candidate whose integrity and independence are unquestionable. He emphasized that strong institutions require competent and impartial individuals to lead them, urging all political actors to work towards ensuring a trusted and functional electoral commission. Darboe concluded by reminding the president that this appointment is an opportunity to solidify his legacy in Gambian democracy.
