Earlier this morning Ambassador of the EU to the Gambia Imma Roca i Cortés delivered a speech at the opening of the 83rd Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul.
As this year, 2025, marks the 25th anniversary of the EU-AU partnership, it was a moment for the EU to reaffirm our commitment to shared values—peace, prosperity, and human rights.
The EU is a longstanding partner in supporting the African Governance Architecture. The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, alongside the African Court, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, and the Pan-African Parliament, plays a crucial role in this framework.
The EU is not immune to human rights challenges and remains committed to open, respectful dialogue. That is why we are preparing for the 20th edition of the EU-AU Human Rights Dialogue in Brussels later this year. It is understood that the African Union Theme of the Year 2025- “Justice for Africans and People of African descent through reparations” and reparations will figure in this upcoming Dialogue.
