The 83rd Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) was officially opened this morning in Banjul, The Gambia. This session will be guided by the African Union’s 2025 theme: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, which focuses on addressing historical injustices and advancing reparations for affected communities.
Following the adoption of impactful resolutions at the recent NGO Forum, we hope the Commission will give due consideration to the Forum’s recommendations during its discussions. Our delegation is looking forward to highlighting the emerging crises across the continent, including the pressing human rights challenges that demand immediate and coordinated action.
The Honourable Minister of Information of the Gambia, Dr Ismaila Ceesay, officially declared the session opened on behalf of Dawda Jallow, the minister of justice.
Mrs Abiola Idowu-Ojo, Executive Secretary, CADHP delivered welcoming remarks to delegates and participants at #ACHPR83OS, setting the benchmarks for the 83rd ordinary session.
H.E. Antonia Simao da Cruz Yaba, Secretary of State for Human Rights and Citizenship, delivered the Statement on behalf of the States Parties to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Hon. Justice Modibo Sacko delivered a virtual statement on behalf of Hon. Justice Imani Aboud, President of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, from Arusha, at the #ACHPR83OS Opening Ceremony.
Hon. Wilson De Almeida Adão, Chairperson of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child in Maseru, Lesotho, joins us in person to deliver the Committee’s official statement at #ACHPR83OS.
Dr. Joseph Whittal, President of the Network of African National Institutions of Human Rights Network of African National Human Rights Institutions – NANHRI joins us virtually to present the Network’s official statement.
Ms Hannah Foster of A African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies climbed the podium to make a statement from the NGO Steering Committee, following the recent NGO Forum that took place in The Gambia.
