The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education wishes to provide clarity to the general public regarding the current situation at Al Madinah Basic Cycle School in Brikama.
Al Madinah Basic Cycle School is a privately owned institution that encountered significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, including difficulties in meeting salary obligations for its teaching staff. Upon becoming aware of these challenges, the Ministry engaged constructively with the school proprietors to ensure the welfare and academic progress of the students were safeguarded.
An agreement was reached allowing students who were enrolled to complete their final levels of grade 6 and grade 9 so that they may successfully transition appropriately to the next stages in their education with minimal disruption. To support this, the Ministry deployed qualified teaching staff to continue educational activities within the school during this transitional period.
We are aware of recent reports concerning access restrictions during the ongoing summer classes and the associated tensions involving the school proprietor. While the proprietor has not indicated any plans to maintain or formally hand over the school to the government, the Ministry remains committed to ensuring that studentsβ education is not
interrupted.
As such, the Ministry will continue open and respectful dialogue with the proprietor to
facilitate a seamless transition and to uphold studentsβ rights to uninterrupted learning.
However, should the proprietor refuse to cooperate or prevent students from accessing the school, the Ministry will be compelled to take further steps to guarantee the safety and education of all students. The Ministry appeals to all parties involved to prioritize the interests of the students and the community, foster mutual respect, and work together towards a peaceful resolution.
We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring quality education for every child and thank the public for its understanding and support during this process
