
The Hon. Speaker, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, has emphasized The Gambia’s strong dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the opening of the 7th Inter-Regional Seminar in Beijing, China. The seminar, which brought together parliamentary leaders and officials from various regions, focused on the progress and challenges in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In his keynote address, Speaker Jatta underscored the pivotal role of parliaments in translating global development goals into national action. He highlighted how the National Assembly of The Gambia is actively engaged in aligning national policies and laws with the SDGs, particularly in areas like poverty eradication, healthcare, and education. Jatta stated, “The National Assembly of The Gambia is a key partner in our nation’s development journey. We are committed to ensuring that our legislative and oversight functions directly contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.”
Hon. Jatta also shared some of The Gambia’s notable achievements, including advancements in universal primary education and maternal health. He pointed out the country’s efforts to enhance food security and promote renewable energy projects. However, he also acknowledged the challenges faced by small states, such as The Gambia, including climate change vulnerability and limited resources. He called for enhanced international cooperation and partnerships to support developing nations in their pursuit of sustainable development.
The Speaker also praised the seminar as a crucial platform for sharing best practices and fostering collaboration among nations. He stressed the importance of a unified global effort to address shared challenges and ensure no one is left behind.
