Chairman of ECOWAS Authority President Julius Maada Bio Engages Guinea- Bissau’s Military Leadership, Reaffirms Commitment to Restore Constitutional Order.
Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, Monday 1 December 2025 – His Excellency Julius Maada Bio,President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government had a constructive engagement with Guinea-Bissau’s military leadership, headed by Major-General Horta Inta-a, reaffirming ECOWAS’s unwavering commitment to
the restoration of constitutional order.
Accompanied by Dr. Omar Allieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Leonardo
Santos Simão, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and
the Sahel, and Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Chair of the Executive Council of ECOWAS, President Bio’s visit to Guinea-Bissau followed a
mandate from an extraordinary session of ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council.
The mandate charged the Chair of the Authority with leading a high-level mission to engage with the leaders of the coup to ensure the full restoration of constitutional order.
During the visit, President Bio and his delegation also met with the Electoral Commission of
Guinea-Bissau, where its Chairman and other members provided briefing on the current situation.
