The Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure in The Gambia has announced an increase in transport fares following consultations with transport unions and key stakeholders.
In a press release issued on April 10, 2026, the Ministry stated that fares for commercial vehicles in the Greater Banjul Area will increase by D5, while passengers traveling to the Foni West Coast Region will pay an additional D15. Motor tricycle bikes are excluded from the adjustment.
Government described the move as a temporary response to rising global fuel prices, largely driven by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. To cushion the impact, the government has introduced a fuel subsidy exceeding D316 million for the month of April.
The Ministry added that discussions are ongoing to determine whether similar fare adjustments may be necessary in rural areas, while calling for public understanding as the country navigates the current economic challenges.
