The murder trial of former Jungler Sanna Manjang took an emotional turn at the Banjul High Court on Tuesday, as two prosecution witnesses gave harrowing accounts of alleged torture and death threats.
A serving soldier and a prison officer testified under oath, describing intimidation and violence they say were carried out by Manjang and other members of the paramilitary unit following The Gambia’s failed March 2006 coup attempt. Their accounts painted a grim picture of detainees subjected to severe abuse and threats to their lives.
The case has attracted wide public attention and is seen as a test of The Gambia’s commitment to justice and accountability for past human rights violations. Proceedings continue this week, with more witnesses expected to testify.
