President Adama Barrow commends the Republic of Bangladesh for the co-deployment of troops for UN Peace Missions during an audience with the highest-ranking official of the Bangladeshi army, General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, at the State House in Banjul on Wednesday morning.

The President expressed optimism that the relationship with Bangladesh would go beyond the co-deployment of peace troopers, noting that the two countries have shared values as members of the OIC and have responsibilities to develop their countries. He mapped out other areas to strengthen their bilateral relationship, covering other strategic partnerships that would enrich The Gambia’s Security Sector Reform –SSR. He stated, “The Gambia has much to learn from the Bangladeshi experience, a major UN troop contributor for peace missions.”
On behalf of The Gambia and Gambians, President Barrow extended his gratitude to the Bangladeshi colleague, the President, and Prime Minister for the support provided to co-deploy peace troopers for the UN, a model from which others could learn.

General Shafiuddin Ahmed expressed gratitude for The Gambia’s role in the Rohingya issue. He informed President Barrow that his delegation’s assessment revealed opportunities for The Gambia and Bangladesh to partner “for a successful joint journey”, adding that he observed professionalism in the Gambian Armed Forces.

The Defence Minister, Hon. Modou Njie, the Chief of Staff of the Gambian Armed Forces, Lt. General Yakuba Drammeh, the State Guard Commander at the State House, Colonel Sait Njie, and other high-ranking officials, including representatives of the UN Peace Mission in New York, and Desk Officer for the Peace Mission at the Gambia’s Permanent Mission in New York, Ms. Isatou Badjie amongst others were present.
